Information

The winter solstice, also known as "Winter Festival" and "Hedong", is one of the twenty-four solar terms in China and one of the eight astronomical solar terms, which is opposite to the summer solstice. The winter solstice begins when the sun reaches the ecliptic longitude 270°, around December 22 of the Gregorian calendar every year. According to legend, the winter solstice in the Zhou Dynasty in history was New Year's Day, which used to be a very lively day.

On the winter solstice, the position of the sun directly on the ground reaches the southernmost point of the year, almost directly on the Tropic of Cancer (23°26'S latitude). The northern hemisphere gets the least sunlight on this day, 50% less than the southern hemisphere. Days in the northern hemisphere are at their shortest and get shorter as you go north.

More commonly, in northern China there is a custom of eating dumplings during the winter solstice. As the saying goes: "When the winter solstice comes, eat dumplings. "In the south, people eat glutinous rice balls. Of course, there are exceptions. For example, in Tengzhou, Shandong and other places, the winter solstice is called Shujiu, and the custom of drinking mutton soup on the day of Shujiu is popular, which means to drive away the cold.
